Eleganza Extravaganza Cats

Vipoo Srivilasa

16 Dec 2023 - 16 Mar 2024

SAC Gallery is proud to present the third solo exhibition of internationally renowned figure in the field of ceramics and award-winning ceramic artist Vipoo Srivilasa, titled “Eleganza Extravaganza Cats”. The exhibition will be on view from December 16, 2023 to March 16, 2024 on the 1st floor, Art Centre Bldg., SAC Gallery

From the tumultuous Stonewall Riots to the upcoming deliberations on the Equal Marriage Rights Bill in the Thai parliament, and from the heartwarming tale of "The Marriage of Sang Thong" in 2019 to the vibrant spectacle of "Eleganza Extravaganza Cats" in 2023, Vipoo Srivilasa's artistic journey mirrors the evolving landscape of queer identity and its pursuit of equality.

Srivilasa's artistic persona is defined by its positivity, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal. Yet, the characters he draws inspiration from, often rooted in Thai folklore and literature, carry profound messages that resonate with the struggles and triumphs of the queer community.

The nine ceramic sculptures in "Eleganza Extravaganza Cats" embody this duality. Inspired by the character of "Nang Maew" from the Thai folk opera* "Chaiyachet", Srivilasa's childhood encounter with drag culture finds expression in these vibrant feline figures. Adorned in elaborate costumes, these cats embody the flamboyant and unconventional beauty of drag queens, celebrating the freedom and self-expression of queer identity.

In his latest exhibition, Srivilasa elevates his artistic expression by incorporating immersive sound. Collaborating with sound designer Sirasar Boonma, he creates a Reading Corner where ASMR, a sensory-stimulating audio experience, blends seamlessly with the visual narrative. The soothing soundscape invites viewers to delve deeper into the exhibition, fostering a connection with the artist's message of self-discovery.

Through his artistic evolution, Srivilasa demonstrates that art can be a powerful tool for social change, illuminating the beauty and resilience of queer existence. His work serves as a testament to the transformative potential of art to inspire positive change and promote understanding, as we continue to strive for a world where equality and acceptance reign supreme.

SAC Gallery invites everyone to experience this Eleganza Extravaganza exhibition and meet the artist himself, who will be flying in from Melbourne, Australia, for the opening reception on Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. onwards. *Note: Thai folk opera, known as "Lakorn Nork", is a type of opera that originated in central Thailand. It is believed to have evolved from the Nora dance-drama, as both forms of performance are characterized by their fast-paced, comedic storylines. In the past, Lakorn Nork was performed exclusively by men. It was not until the late reign of King Rama IV that women were allowed to perform in Lakorn Nork, when the king issued a decree lifting the ban on women's troupes. In recent years, women have become the dominant performers of Lakorn Nork, with men making up a small minority. (Source: Thai Encyclopedia for Youth, Volume 13, Topic 5, Thai Classical Dance)
