Folded Corners

Yi-Shuan Lee and Ray Han

Date:

7 June 2025 - 6 July 2025

“Folded Corners”, a pop-up exhibition curated by RIVER ART GALLERY, featuring Taiwanese Canadian artist Yi-Shuan Lee and Taiwanese artist Ray Han. Both artists, born in Taiwan but shaped by different upbringings and distinct artistic languages, unite for this special showcase in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Folded Corners” refers to the turned corner of a book page. This informal marker exists between privacy and public display—understated yet deliberately pointing to nodes worthy of attention, revealing a certain weight not yet fully unfolded. In this exhibition, Yi-Shuan Lee intervenes in the canvas space with cartoon-styled lines. His emphasis on brushstrokes, structure, and linear visual forms articulates a state between suppression and desire. The edges of his images are defined by black outlines, resembling an urgent cry for attention. Though seemingly light at first glance, these images convey the anxiety of a younger generation forced to position themselves between the expectations of previous generations and fragmentary cultural influences.

Yi-Shuan Lee demonstrates that amid such chaos, marking becomes urgent; the folded corner becomes both a plea for understanding of self and others, and a form of resistance against narrative monopolization.

Ray Han’s canvases function as extensions of skin. Through simplified lines and mottled styles reminiscent of cave paintings or epidermal textures, he establishes tattoo-like imagery that creates a visual language both personal and collective. His creative voice is simultaneously assertive and reserved, like a marker intentionally left partially concealed. The stories behind his images remain unspecified, leaving space for projection.

His art emerges from experiences bound to daily life—images like tattoos that mark certain experiences while silently recording the gaps between history and reality.

“Folded Corners” is not an ending but an entrance—a corner jointly folded by both artists. Yi-Shuan Lee and Ray Han remind viewers that some narratives remain unfinished, some structures have yet to unfold, and some positions need to be repeatedly revisited along the timeline to be fully understood. They invite viewers to step into these folded corners, leaving us all with a surreal dream at the crossroads of this culturally intertwined city.

Come fold the corners of your memories with us—tucking away the beauty of this moment in “Folded Corners” ,a tender exhibition that invites you to preserve what’s precious.
