The experiences gained from traveling both in the capital city and various provinces of Thailand, as well as the deep appreciation for the cultural context of the country over a span of decades, became the foundation of Wendy Teakel’s artistic creation for the Art Residency program at MATDOT Art Center, which took place between August and October 2023.
Wendy’s practice engages spatially and temporally with ideas of site and explores relationships between cultural and natural spaces through the lens of Assemblage and Collage. By involving numerous objects and images from various settings, such as temples, ancient sites and markets, she creates her "Imperfect Perusal" of Thailand. By employing various techniques such as burning paper, layering materials, or sandpaper abrasion on paintings and mixed media sculpture, these processes of assemblage and collage manufacture an archaeology; a sense of time passing or a fragmentation in the work.
Her approach encourages reflection on the transitory nature of place and the balance between creation and destruction. Use your eyes and experience, take your time with art and it will reveal its meaning.
