Our October film is a truly special one, as it captures the real-life story of a celebrated director and his actress-wife-played by none other than the celebrity-couple themselves! We are talking about Bangladesh’s renowned director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki and his acclaimed actress-wife Nusrat Imrose Tisha, the country’s best-known film couple. Farooki, a pioneer of his country’s new-wave cinema, has had his films screened at many festivals around the world, where they have won top awards. Tisha has played the lead in many of his movies.
During the Covid lockdown, the couple jointly wrote the script of ‘Something like an Autobiography’, based on their own lives. The title comes from the opening line of famed Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s memoir- a director whom Farooki deeply admires. In addition to directing, Farooki also steps in front of the camera for the first time to play the male lead, opposite Tisha.
Like with all of Farooki’s work, the film weaves the personal with the social and political. As he explains-“The stories of others become my own personal stories, that’s why all my films are autobiographical. But in this case we ourselves are the subject. So, it is deeply personal.” The film captivated both critics and audiences at noteworthy festivals, like Busan (Korea), Mumbai (India), Sydney (Australia), and the couple were moved by the overwhelming response everywhere.
The film opens with a scene in Pattaya- so, we are happy that the film is being screened in Thailand, for the first time. The Director has been to Thailand many times, and says “It truly feels like a second home to me.”
Late last year, the famed film-maker was given a prestigious post, as Adviser to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, in the Interim Government of Bangladesh.
