The project “The Power of Art Beyond Barriers”: an exhibition and professional development experience that brings creative energy from behind the walls to new opportunities on the global stage grew from a shared commitment to move beyond conventional ideas of corrections, shifting from physical confinement toward spaces for rehabilitation, behavioral development, and the sustainable reintegration of individuals into society. It recognizes that “the hardest wall to face after release may not be the prison wall, but the walls of social prejudice and stigma.” The project aims to build an ecosystem of opportunity that connects the entire value chain in practical ways, from rehabilitation, education, and vocational skills to creativity, product design, access to real markets, income generation, employment, and post-release support.
Looking ahead, the project has established a long-term strategic roadmap to activate a network of 143 prisons nationwide through the development of the Artists Beyond Barriers Digital Platform. The platform will support ongoing artwork purchases, employment opportunities, and business matchmaking beyond the end of the exhibition. The project also aims to progress from a national platform to the ASEAN stage, and ultimately to an international showcase, THE POWER OF ART BEYOND BARRIERS – INTERNATIONAL EXPO, positioning Thailand as a global hub for human rehabilitation through art and the creative economy. The exhibition features learning and experience zones, as well as products for sale from prisons and
correctional institutions nationwide, including the Central Women’s Correctional Institution, Thon Buri Special Prison, Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institution, Fang District Prison, Phitsanulok Women’s Correctional Institution, the Central Young Offenders Institution, Chiang Rai Central Prison, Chiang Mai Women’s Correctional Institution, and Songkhla Central Prison.
The exhibition is divided into seven zones showcasing a wide range of disciplines, including painting, sculpture, fine craftsmanship, contemporary design, furniture, fashion, home décor, and digital art, all available at accessible prices. The offerings are suitable for art collectors, fashion enthusiasts, and anyone seeking distinctive gifts or souvenirs, including fashion garments, handmade crafts, fiber-based creations, artwork, the art and science of care, demonstrations of embroidery and smocking, and vocational demonstrations in barista skills, coffee, and beverage preparation.
In addition, special music and performing arts programmes will take place on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., presented by Bangkok Special Prison. On Saturday, 26 September, enjoy “Capital Festival Dance” and the Chingcha Mahanakhon luk thung band. On Sunday, 27 September, listen to music by the BRP Band and watch the special performance “Forging the Hearts of Thai Women: Nareeratana.”
