Lines are rarely straight; they wanders, bends, and tucks themselves away. In "Beyond the Fold," artist Davisi Boontharm invites the viewers to explore the traditional orihon (accordion style) sketchbooks as more than vessels for sketching that unfold, becoming the structural paths and objects of art in their own right.
Drawing from her complex life as simultaneously an artist and an academic in the fields of architecture and urbanism, Davisi translates the travel diaries into sophisticated spatial narratives.
This exhibition traces the evolution of her journeys, transforming fleeting moments into an expansive study of places and lives. Part of the exhibits is her exploration of the palimpsest; much like her research investigation of urban situations, her artistic layering, superimpositions and rediscoveries of memory and history enable novel dialogues between the old and the new. The unique combination of linearity and folding enable the viewer to catch rhythmic flows of lines and colours that mimics the act of navigating a city. Yet, the story doesn't end at the paper’s edge; it follows the hidden echoes of personal experiences that refuse to be contained—the memories and urban connections that exist beyond the fold.
