Lunar: The Land without Time takes our perception of what appears and exists before us as its starting point, without mapping a fixed route from what we see to any single meaning. Every element, whether seen, touched or simply sensed, leaves space for visitors to build their own understanding from their own experience.
Lunar is a project Varalee Na Pombejr has developed since her days as an art student. Once a little girl who acted as a storyteller travelling to different places, Lunar now returns with a question that has long followed the artist: what is Lunar, and how can her existence be perceived? Through the idea of Flat Ontology, "Lunar-ness" is no longer tied to the form of a girl. Light, scent, temperature, darkness, space and objects all share the same plane and help her presence emerge, through two states of time: Remembering and Becoming.
The exhibition unfolds in two rooms. The Main Installation draws on the artist's travels in Poland, where she felt that "everything was as sad as I was", until the small light and warmth of a café appeared. Visitors walk a long, dark, cool corridor scented with wood and forest towards a warm glow from an inner room, opposite which a faceless sculpture of Lunar sits hugging her knees in dim light. The Photo Installation presents mixed-media photographs taken during a residency in Vienna, where the artist took Lunar out to "meet friends" by public transport. The works rotate three times during the exhibition and are shown alongside three small Lunar sculptures.
